Philippines: The mining debate: Time to think small

A couple of studies attest to the importance of small-scale mining in the Philippines: a 2004 presentation by UK-based Edmund Bugnosen of Communities and Small-Scale Mining (CASM) on formalizing the local small-scale mining sector, and a pioneering 2002 study on mercury poisoning and small-scale gold mining by Danilo Israel and Jasminda Asirot of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, a think tank under the National Economic and Development Authority.
