According to the Community Relations Mmanager of the company, Mr. Vitus Ngaanuma, a swoop by the police in an operation sometime last year, led to the confiscation of about 30 jerry cans of cyanide, a poisonous substance used in the extractive industry. He said the company was exploring to ascertain the viability of its concessions in some of the areas, but unfortunately, illegal miners have taken over the concessions.
Mr. Ngaanuma complained that apart from operating in the company's concessions, the illegal miners also go to farmlands destroying food crops and other medicinal plants.
He said the use of chemicals in an uncontrolled manner was another major source of concern, as it had the potential to poison the few water bodies in the area, and the land itself.
