Each day, the two men scavenge for scrap steel and bottles to sell in their constant struggle for survival. There has been no running water, electricity or sanitation at the hostel since the crisis at Grootvlei started in early 2010 under the helm of the former owner, the controversial Aurora Empowerment Systems.
Headed by Zondwa Mandela, Nelson Mandela’s grandson, and Khulubuse Zuma, the nephew of President Jacob Zuma, they ran both the Grootvlei and Orkney mines into the ground, plundered all the assets and left 5 000 miners without work.
