Disputes over water rights have drawn national attention over the past few months as a consequence of the country's booming mining industry. One of the key issues surrounds US-based Newmont Mining's (MYSE: NEM) Minas Conga copper-gold project in Cajamarca region.
Pulgar-Vidal said the government will wait for the results of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) before making any decision on the dispute, noting that the region's water resources are the government's priority.
Opposition to Conga has mainly centered on water use, as some residents are concerned that the project will affect the supply for human consumption and agriculture.
