“But mercury contamination is already widespread in
Kalimantan and Sulawesi, as well as other islands,
including Java. Small-scale gold mining is by far the
greatest cause of mercury emissions in Indonesia.

mercury are emitted by gold processors every year. In
Central Kalimantan, over 50,000 kilograms are emitted
into the environment each year in one location alone.”
