Illegal Mining Destroys Zimbabwe's Rivers


"The damage caused by illegal mining is enormous," he said. "It's a vicious cycle as people are taking to panning in order to earn a living, but in the end their activities are causing untold degradation."
Aside from the damage to bodies of water, IRIN reported mercury poisoning has become a problem. Illegal miners often mix mercury in with the ore they find to increase their yield. The mercury then gets into the water supply.
