Since small-scale gold mining is predominantly in rural areas, the likelihood of mercury contamination in these areas are quite high and health risks to these communities have largely been unmonitored.
“We will be embarking on an ambitious project to train rural healthcare workers in areas that are known to use mercury, in order to improve capacity in proper mercury poisoning diagnosis, in the coming months,” explains Francia-Santos. “By helping local communities identify mercury poisoning, we hope to change minds in these areas and be convinced that mercury poisoning is very real.”
