A GOLDMINING community in Colombia has been found to have the highest mercury pollution levels in the world due to an outdated gold refining process.
The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) used two types of mobile spectrometers to measure airborne mercury levels in the province of Antioquia.
Five of the cities that were studied had mercury levels that were 10 times the WHO limits, and in one town mercury levels near schools were 40 times WHO safety limits.
