The practice of gold mining remains contentious. Mining gold is an inherently destructive process, but the demand for gold, and therefore the price, remains high. The industry employs in the region of 15m workers globally, many of whom take huge health risks and are not paid market rates. Many are underage, uneducated and live well below acceptable standards – and that’s before we examine the enormous environmental impact of gold production, which involves toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide and uses vast quantities of water.
