Protect The Peruvian Amazon From Illegal Gold Mining

The gold extraction processes uses mercury which pollutes the waterways and contaminates the food chain resulting in a public health concern. It is estimated that for every gram of gold mined three times more mercury is used to extract it. What once was lush jungle has become dry desert spotted with pools of stagnant, polluted water. In the last year the Peruvian environment minister has called for the shutdown of 80% of the gold mining region whether it is legal or not.
