Monks Jailed In Shigatse For Protesting Against Rampant Mining

Monks and villagers of Tamo Town had staged a sustained protest from Nov 22 to Dec 18 last year, protesting against the reckless mining operation in their area. The authorities tried to talk them into giving up their peaceful protest without giving any concession. They eventually crushed the protest by bringing in large number of police and paramilitary armed police personnel. Many were severely beaten and arrested, including the five recently sentenced monks.
