ILLEGAL miners have resorted to a new method of extracting minerals along the Iponan River in order to avoid detection, the mayor of Opol town in Misamis Oriental disclosed. Mayor Dexter Yasay said the new method ensures silence in the illegal mining operations. Yasay said some of the illegal miners have built minidams along the Iponan River so that they could get rid of the noisy hydraulic pumps they use in flush mining. Flush mining or hydraulic mining, which is considered unfriendly to the environment, has been widely blamed as one of the factors for the December 2011 devastation in the city.
