Imagine someone still using a horizontal water wheel to grind low-grade, gold-containing ore in the presence of mercury. Imagine the effects on people who handle raw mercury every day and the effect on the younger generations. My recent trek into Latin America was both culturally enriching and a heart breaker – watching the younger generation go into no-other-choice minining work. Techniques introduced by the Spaniards centuries ago are still being used today.
