Local villagers and students have been protesting against the joint gold mining venture for almost a year. Their main argument focuses on the potential environmental damage to their land, water and livelihoods once the drilling begins. Hydraulic mining consumes large quantities of water and can cause flattening of hills, and flooding thereafter. Extractive processes, such as those used in gold mining can discharge chemical and other toxic waste, causing water contamination. Arc Exploration has maintained, however, that both miners were in full compliance with all regulatory and license requirements.
