Studies by the Environmental Protection Agency and other environmental groups show that 40% of Western watersheds are now polluted due to mining. Modern mining operations use toxic chemicals and create large quantities of waste, disrupting habitats for wildlife, and polluting water and public lands. For example, toxic metal drainage from the Formosa mine in Oregon has contaminated approximately 18 miles of salmon habitat; Montana’s Zortman Landusky mine has polluted several nearby streams with arsenic, selenium and other harsh toxins—examples of environmental degradation at the hand of mining are seemingly endless.
