DRD Gold machines extract the remains of gold and uranium residue in the dumps towering over Riverlea residents.
These deadly man-made hills, which contain toxic residue and heavy metals, are impacting on the environment and the health of surrounding communities. Near the dumps are tailing dams filled with toxic sludge.
“If you are on or adjacent to the dams you will be exposed to radon and radon gas, which can lead to cancer,” Mariette Liefferink from The Federation for a Sustainable Environment (FSE) told The New Age.
