Kumasi, Nov 15, GNA – A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Suleman Gado, has called for bold and decisive measures to tackle the growing degradation of the environment through illegal gold mining.
He told the GNA that the government would have to show strong political will to end the impunity.
He said the situation where water bodies are being polluted and the forests ruined by the activities of these miners could not be allowed to continue and added that he found it disturbing the involvement of foreigners, particularly the Chinese, in illegal mining.
Alhaji Gado said it must not be lost on any one that “we owe it a duty to ourselves and posterity to protect our environment.”
He also appealed to the leadership of all the political parties to encourage their followers to carry themselves well ahead of the 2012 general elections and that they should do everything to ensure that the unity and cohesion of the country was preserved.
