Indonesia On Brink Of Mercury Disaster

In the last five years, the number of illegal gold miners in Indonesia has soared to 250,000 from 50,000 previously. Mercury consumption increases sharply in Indonesia. The use of mercury would be forbidden globally in 2013
Based on a research by Yayasan Tumbuhak Sinta in smallholder mining site Poboya (Palu, Central Sulawesi) in 2010, over 240 tons of elemental mercury have been released in the region, while survey by Yayasan Balifokus up to June 2011 predicts that the volume of mercury used in Poboya is around four tons per day or 1,400 tons per annum.
