Stamp Program Objectives

In order to address the global mercury problem, Aladdin has developed the Strategic Abatement of Mercury and Poverty (STAMP) program. This program is designed to induce artisanal and all mercury mining users to adopt Aladdin's highly efficient mining technologies. The fundamental strategy looks to illustrate the economic advantages of HGP to the miners. Although being able to provide a safe work environment , safety benefits alone are not sufficient to convince indigent miners to abandon mercury processing. Ultimately, the success of the program must rely on its ability to provide the miners with a greater level of income than what they are able to derive when using mercury. The broad objectives of the STAMP Program are as follows:
1. Employ as many artisanal miners as is possible while maintaining the economical integrity of the program.
2. Work to eliminate the use of mercury when extracting gold in the customary artisanal alluvial concentrates and hard rock deposit areas.
3. Increase artisanal miner wages above the national average and provide bonuses based on gold revenues.
4. Create new employment opportunities and provide training for higher paid jobs in the trades, management, administration, accounting, mining, geology, process engineering, and attendant disciplines.
5. Provide a humanitarian fund to benefit the miners and their families.
6. Convert sites to farming land or forestry after gold is depleted from the properties.
7. Attract artisanal miners to proven gold reserves set aside by large scale mining companies and / or the government.
8. Make a profit for all stakeholders

Aladdin's Pledge To Social Responsibility

Aladdin's Pledge To Social Responsibility

Aladdin Technologies Inc. is dedicated to bringing environmentally friendly processes to host countries so that mineral wealth can be extracted in a way that does not endanger local ecosystems or the health of native people. This interest - coupled with a commitment to mutual respect and a close involvement with all stakeholders - is behind the company's drive to help the government and citizens of countries achieve maximum benefit from their mineral resources. We also recognize that shareholder interests are best served when - based on our ethical treatment of indigenous people and sensitivity to environmental issues - countries actively seek out business relationships with the company.

Social responsibility is not simply an abstract concept, but rather, a realistic moral command and business strategy. Aladdin will do whatever is reasonable to help the communities of people around the world with which it interacts. Therefore, to disregard the tenants of mutual respect and fair trade would not only be morally corrupt, but it could also damage shareholder value in company mineral endeavors. Aladdin endeavors to be a leader in the way in which it brings obligations of social responsibility to its business enterprises.

Amazon illegal gold mines drive sex trafficking in the Brazil-Guyana border

“Rivers and other water sources are contaminated [mainly by mercury used in illegal gold mining], a problem that snowballs as it prevents communities from fishing and the water becomes unfit for human consumption,” environmental engineer Luís Augusto Oliveira, a member of the research collective MapBiomas focusing on the Amazon, told Mongabay.

Illegal mining threatening lives, environment, expert warns

“As a result, harmful operational practices are minimised. The use of toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide commonly used in gold extraction and known to cause soil and water contamination (both surface and groundwater) is strictly controlled in licensed mining companies.”

River Kok in Chiang Rai poisoned with arsenic from Wa state-controlled gold mining across the border

However, critics say that’s not enough. “You can’t solve this with sandbags,” said environmental health expert Somporn Phengkham. “We need sediment analysis, water testing, and mercury checks. Arsenic may be just one of many toxins.”

She said mercury often accompanies gold mining. “It can enter the food chain through catfish and predators. This could affect pregnant women and children first.”

Why Has Peru Struggled to Limit Illegal Gold Mining?

Regionally, illegal mining has surpassed cocaine as Latin America’s most lucrative criminal enterprise, financing authoritarian regimes (like Venezuela’s Maduro) and driving 48 percent of Peru’s illicit financial flows. High gold prices—now exceeding $3,000 per ounce—intensify incentives, with mercury contamination and deforestation causing irreversible ecological harm in biodiverse zones like Madre de Dios, where 94 percent of residents show mercury poisoning.

The environmental costs of the war in Sudan

Both sides of the current conflict have used gold to finance the war, much of it produced informally through small-scale artisanal mining — a sector that employed over one million people in 2017. Even before the conflict, communities across Sudan were already experiencing the environmental impacts of gold mining, including land degradation, high erosion and siltation rates, and contamination from cyanide and mercury.

The amalgam that is poisoning people

Mercury exposure can cause irreversible brain damage, developmental delays, tremors and loss of vision, hearing and coordination.

“Beyond Gold: The True Cost of ‘Galamsey’ on Our Environment”-Hassan-Cisse Abdul-Wahab writes

Used to extract gold from ore, mercury forms an amalgam with the metal, which is later heated to release the mercury vapour. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that contaminates water bodies and vegetation.

The Deadly Global Gold Rush

Although artisanally mined gold provides a livelihood for mining communities in many countries, many small-scale mines situated in conflict areas or authoritarian states frequently employ children as young as eight years old and damage the environment by using corrosive chemicals, including mercury and cyanide.

Mercury fuels gold mining in Senegal. And it’s poisoning the people who use it

The quickest way to separate gold from rock, Sadio Camara says, is with a drop of mercury. She empties a dime-sized packet of the silvery liquid into a plastic bucket of muddy sediment outside her home in southeastern Senegal. With bare hands and no mask, she swirls the mixture as her children look on.

Opinion: Galamsey and Deforestation—A Double Blow to Public Health

The health risks do not end with disease vectors. Galamsey frequently employs mercury and other toxic substances to extract gold. These pollutants leach into rivers and underground water sources, contaminating drinking water and causing long-term health effects such as kidney damage, neurological disorders, and developmental delays in children (Mapulanga et al., 2018). Mercury poisoning in artisanal mining communities is a well-documented but largely unmitigated problem.

Stop Mercury in Illegal Gold Mining

For 17 years, as a gold mining business consultant based in Surabaya, Indonesia, I’ve worked closely with artisanal miners and witnessed the devastating impact of mercury use in illegal and small-scale gold mining. Mercury, used to extract gold, poisons miners, their families, and surrounding communities. It contaminates rivers, kills fish, and destroys ecosystems, leaving a toxic legacy for generations. In Indonesia, thousands of miners rely on this dangerous practice due to a lack of affordable alternatives and knowledge.
