In 2011, Human Rights Watch documented the use of child labor in Mali’s artisanal gold mines and found that thousands of children suffered serious violations of their rights to health, education, and protection from economic exploitation and hazardous work.[20] Many children worked with mercury, which attacks the central nervous system and can cause lifelong disability, including brain damage, and even death. It is particularly harmful to children, as their systems are still developing; the younger the child, the more serious the risk.
