Mercury is a global pollutant and the focus of an international multilateral environmental agreement (MEA), the Minamata Convention. Most of the mercury entering the environment comes from anthropogenic sources including artisanal small-scale gold mining activities, industrial plants, coal burning, incinerators, industrial mining, and associated processing.
