In artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), liquid mercury is used to extract gold from the ore, but this practice can be harmful to human health and the environment. In a recent study, Japanese scientists analyzed the potential unintended consequences of the main strategies proposed to minimize mercury use and emissions in ASGM under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Their findings will draw attention to these dangerous side effects and help achieve sustainability in ASGM.
