The environmental impact of mining directly affects the Yanomami, who live much of what the forest provides. Logging the forest and mining ore with mercury pollutes rivers and land, kills and drives away animals.
“The water is dirty, the river is yellow, everything is full of holes. Illegal miners are like pigs, “Davi Kopenawa said when presenting the report:” They come like hungry animals, seeking the riches of our land. They are expanding very fast. They’re reaching right into the heart of Yanomami territory”.
