Two commodities that are frequently taken over illegally are gold and mercury, and in the Guiana Shield region, one does not go without the other. Gold is Guyana’s primary export product thanks in large part to mercury, the toxic quicksilver used in its extraction process. In 2015, Guyana produced 19.1 tonnes of gold, according to official records, requiring an estimated 29 tonnes of mercury. Both numbers are most likely much higher now, as gold production has increased since 2015 and a significant amount of Guyanese gold is trafficked abroad.
