Uganda: Mercury posing health, environmental dangers for communities

Gold mining is one of the leading economic activities for poor communities in Busia, Namayingo, Mubende, Moroto and Buhweju districts.
However, the use of the toxic mercury poses a threat to the health of these communities, the environment and aquatic life.
A study has found mercury in the blood and urine samples of artisanal miners, foodstuffs and even fish in communities that have been polluted by this chemical.
