A Safer Gold Rush? Curbing Mercury Pollution in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining

The miners engage in a centuries-old process of gold extraction that involves the intensive use of mercury. “Mercury makes this entire system function,” says Gavin Hilson, an environmental policy researcher at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. Hilson has studied the environmental and social impacts of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Kombangou and other locales.
