The most vulnerable to mercury are children, newborn babies and fetuses; populations who eat fish containing mercury, people who use mercury at work, and those who live near sources of mercury pollution are also at risk.
BAN Toxics pointed out that the Philippines is already struggling with the weight of mercury pollution from contaminated sites, such as the closed Palawan Quicksilver mines, which caused high levels of mercury exposure in communities surrounding the mine.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) have found the significant contribution of the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector to mercury pollution in the country.
