Thousands of illegal miners have devastated the area by using destructive mining techniques that include using machines to extract gold and pools of cyanide to separate the mineral from rocks.
Worse yet, people plant various crops at the foot of these cyanide pools, however they prefer to stay quiet on the matter than confront the grave consequences of the environmental pollution caused by the mining.
Illegal mining seems to be the norm in the area – according to a police report, even the district mayor, Sigifredo Rojas Guevara, and his son Alan participated in environmentally negligent activity.
The mining is considered to be illegal because of the practice’s abuse use of toxic chemicals like cyanide.
