Mining companies have had a difficult time operating in several countries including the Philippines, and it’s not without reason. In the past decades, pollution and disasters in mining operations have caused environmental catastrophes that took human lives and destroyed rivers and ecosystems, with the damage taking generations to reverse. Mining accidents have also caused serious public health problems similar to the impact of radioactive contamination in affected communities.
Acknowledging mistakes and acts of negligence, mining companies began cleaning up their operations, investing in technology and processes that minimize the risks of accidents and are kinder to the environment, and tightening compliance with safety rules.
