Cross-cutting issues such as HIV/AIDS, gender inequities and environment have also been tackled through awareness raising and training activities, particularly with peer groups, establishment and running of the VSLAs and small scale miners.
The project recognised that commercial sex work was also prevalent in mining areas. Interviewed retired social scientist, Dr Salum Kauzeni suggested stringent measures taken against owners of small-scale mines who prefer hiring children to the adult to achieve effortless control.
"I have been to the mines to witness the sickening risks, the children have to suffer. The deep dark narrow pits at the mining sites are meant for the children. The adult will not even think of going there. This is absurd," Kauzeni remarked.
