And as the economy further shrinks and citizens lose jobs, hard pressed citizens are tearing up Zimbabwe's landscape in search of gold and other minerals, leaving behind a trail of devastation -- desolate fields and forests and mud-choked rivers with mercury-dirtied water.
Displaced from work and spurred by a disastrous economy and an astronomical cost of living, thousands of desperate poor people have ventured into illegal mining, leaving a trail of environmental destruction that is alarming farmers, environmentalists, traditional leaders and a usually unbothered administration.
