Recently, a joint task force from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the PNP, the PA, the local government of Sta. Catalina and the barangay council of San Francisco conducted a five-day operation to dismantle mining structures in the sub-villages of Baknit, Tarug and Bantolino.
The team confiscated some equipment used in the illegal activities, but Charlie Fabre, head of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, admitted that the problem will continue unless firmer measures are in place.
Fabre also said residents in the area are protesting against the activities because their water supply has already been affected.
