Artisanal
and Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) is one of the most significant
sources of mercury release into the environment in the developing world
and accounts for about 15% of the world's production. Mercury is often
used in ASGM to help separate gold from sediments using crude processing
method and to form an amalgam.
Recognizing
the impact of ASGM to the health and environment, the Philippine
Government through the Department of Health (DOH) Regional Office XI,
conducted a seminar on Alternative Method and Basic Management of
Mercury last November 5-7, 2014 at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City.
