AFTER overindulging in more than 120 years of lucrative gold mining, South Africa now has a massive hangover to deal with: to start closing down depleted mines.
Fixing the problem would require South Africa to spend as much as $1bn (about R10bn) to make toxic water leaking from abandoned mine shafts drinkable, the Department of Water Affairs said. The government and mines would foot part of the bill, but the cost would mostly fall on consumers, said Marius Keet, acting chief director of the department’s office in Gauteng.
