Over the years, the
operation of artisanal and small-scale gold mining in this town have
caused rivers to be silted and, worse, polluted with harmful bacteria
and mercury, a hazardous substance used by small-scale gold miners.
Each water-treatment
facility can treat a few hundred to several thousand gallons of water
per minute, depending on the size of the plant.
The facilities will
filter water systems, allowing the removal and stacking of dry sediments
on one hand, and treat water to make biological and chemical
oxygen-demand levels at a minimum.
