At this point, officials with the Colorado Department of Natural Resources Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety say they don't know the extent of the contamination and are still sorting out details of the operations at the rogue mill. They fenced off the area in southwest Colorado this week, issued a cease-and-desist order, hired a consultant to do testing, and notified state and federal health and environmental agencies.
"We do believe there was mercury used there. It certainly appears there was," said Tony Waldron, supervisor of the minerals program for the division.
