The Northern Territory Government will force mining companies to a pay a levy to help pay for the clean-up of toxic legacy mines.
Several former mines, including the old Mount Todd gold mine near Katherine, about 250 kilometres south of Darwin, continue to pose significant risks to the environment.
Mines Minister Willem Westra Van Holthe says, from October, mining companies will pay an additional 1 per cent on top of their existing environmental bonds.
"Up until now, there has been no specific funding set aside to deal with legacy mine sites in the Northern Territory," he said.
