A training programme is set to commence in the first week of June, and this will be conducted by officers from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). The officers will be fanning-out into the different mining districts to educate miners on better, more sustainable mining practices.
Issues such as environmental management of the mining sector, particularly the use of mercury and human resource skills development, and updating of the codes of practices and guidelines are critical to sustainable mining practices.
The Ministry is also looking at adopting mercury-free technology as alternatives. Minister Persaud said that thus far, several miners have already moved in this direction. Mercury-free equipment is available, and can be procured from places like North America, Australia and China.
