Governments often require that mining companies staff their sites with a certain percentage of local labour. Failure to consult all indigenous populations, relevant NGOs, environmental groups and quasi-government organizations (municipal, regional and provincial) can result in vocal opposition, project delays and even the loss of licenses to operate.
To meet these expectations, the report suggests that mining companies must adopt more rigorous corporate responsibility practices. Corporate social responsibility is demanding greater focus from mining companies around the world. Leading companies must incorporate sustainability into internal processes, engage in microeconomic analysis, earn project buy-in with more intimate community engagement, adopt social media strategies and use data analytics to get early warning of emerging risks.
