Benítez explained, “As an environmental institute and as a government we are not prepared to accept any projects that don’t comply with the Environmental Qualifications Resolutions, and with the commitments to the environment made there.”
The Copiapó court of Appeals supported Soto’s appeal to stop the works. The Order dictates the “total paralysis of all works and labours to do with the construction of this project, while a definitive judicial decision is discussed. Only those tasks which are deemed indispensable by the Environmental Superintendence to ensure that harm to the environment ends are to be allowed.”
