The impacts of mining are disproportionally felt by local citizens with less than 10% of the revenues received by district governments or traditional local authorities. Greater attention should be given to both broadening the scope of mitigation and compensation policies to include all those living in affected areas, as mining is shown to impact all those living in its vicinity, as well as better redistributing mining revenues from central government to local areas.
It is also important for environmental policies to consider the possible impact of mine-related pollution on crop yields and local income.
