As an observer, I see the proposed KGHM Ajax mine development close to and within city limits has resulted in an emotional reaction among fellow citizens, possibly due to a perceived lack of democratic process at a municipal level.
Citizens have been informed that the environmental public-health decision as to whether the open-pit copper and gold mine will be approved will occur only at the provincial and federal governmental levels.
Is this because there is no Canadian precedent for development of a mine of this magnitude within city limits? Voters in the Kamloops-North Thompson and Kamloops-South Thompson constituencies have the opportunity on May 14 to make a democratic choice about who will be part of the provincial legislature making this public-health decision.
