The protesters gathered in front of the Quezon City Hall, just adjacent to the Quezon Memorial Circle where President Aquino was guest of honor of an event co-organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the local government of Quezon City and Earth Day Network-Philippines (EDNP).
“We are dumbfounded by [the] government’s claims that the administration is serious in its ‘ecogovernance.’ The environmental track record of the Aquino administration shows otherwise,” Clemente Bautista Jr., national coordinator of Kalikasan-People’s Network for the Environment (Kalikasan-PNE), said.
Bautista was reacting to a statement issued by the DENR quoting Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje claiming that the Aquino administration made significant headway in terms of environmental governance that gained international recognition for its strong environmental performance.
The protesters said that as far as they are concerned, President Aquino’s environmental governance is “a total failure,” noting that under his watch, the country experienced some of the worst disasters in history, particularly in mining.
