Minewatch Northland opposes toxic mining - mining for rock-bound minerals such as gold, silver and copper - because of its "detrimental effects on the waterways" of the north and says it supports sustainable industries that are not detrimental to "the environment and the wellbeing of people in this region".
Mining for rock-bound minerals produces toxic byproducts that will linger for generations after the industry that creates them leaves, the group says. And the industry lacks "real benefits to the communities of the north".
