Gold miners in Marudi are preparing to legally challenge the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission’s (GGMC) decision to evict them from the southern Rupununi area.
Attorney-at-Law, Khemraj Ramjattan said he also plans to file for damages for the assault allegedly committed by a police corporal on several persons including a woman and her 10-year old son.
Those allegedly assaulted are Errol Prince, Verona Prince, Lorenzo Prince, the youth Ronaldo Prince and a man only known as “Eagle”. Videos have surfaced showing a policeman beating the persons with a sturdy whip that he had moments earlier cut from a nearby tree. The alleged beating was done in the presence of GGMC officers and other policemen. The Guyana Police Force has been mum on the incident. Police Commissioner, Leroy Brummel has for several days declined to take calls from journalists. While the police force has not issued any statement on the incident, the GGMC has said that the confrontation was regrettable. The incident occurred when a group of miners had blocked a trail to prevent police, Mines Officers and a truck from passing into the area where mining equipment and shops were located.
