Barrick U.S. gold mining facilities produced 3.38 million ounces of gold in 2011 with the Cortez Gold Mine viewed as one of the world’s largest gold operations.
The violations stem from incorrect reporting under the federal Emergency Planning and Community Right-To Know Act (EPCRA) at the Cortez Gold Mine near Crescent Valley, Nevada, the Ruby Hill Gold Mine near Eureka, Nevada, and the Bald Mountain Mine near the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada.
“Careful analysis of the miners’ records by EPA inspectors revealed that the facilities failed to submit timely, complete and Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) reports in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, for toxic chemicals,” said the EPA. “These chemicals include cyanide compounds used to extract gold from ore mined at the facilities, and lead and mercury compounds produced during the extraction process.”
