The manager says alluvial gold mining carried out mostly on river banks, is serious polluter of environment.
Those who engage in the illegal act disturb direction of source of water as they divert the patch to look for the mineral. In the process, water volume to the dam is considerably reduced.
The expert’s view is echoed by Deodatus Mfugale, former Journalists Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET) Chairman, who says perpetrators of the vice, who carry their activities along river banks, do so due to lust for quick money.
“Normally, these are small scale miners who use inferior equipment in excavation of the mineral, polluting the water in the process”, says Mfugale also an environmental activist.
“Alluvial gold mining is an illegal undertaking since it destroys river banks”, asserts Mfugale, adding that the vice has disastrous effects on both human and marine life since mercury, a deadly chemical is involved in the extraction process.
