The meeting is scheduled for January 13-18 and local stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), and the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) met here on Tuesday to finalise the country’s participation at the talks.
“We wanted the team to benefit from a wid recognises that small and medium size mining is crucial in the livelihood of thousands of people, not only in Guyana, but in their country and in terms of gold mining activity and mercury and the use of mercury certainly mercury cannot be wish away unless or until we find affordable accessible technologies,” he said.
He said the ministry is working with the GGMC in facilitating the transition.
“We have been doing some technical work at looking at alternatives so that we can move away as it were closer in the direction of mercury-free mining,”
