According to the Conservator, water supplied by the Tanga Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Tanga-UWASA) has been changing in colour because of the illegal activities going in the tributaries of Zigi River.
“Illegal miners encroach on the fragile land, which pumps water in the streams which later joins the main river…they do so because, they believe that gold is found in those areas. But they cause serious damage to the environment and water flowing to the Indian Ocean,” pointing out that the miners cut down trees located on the marginal lands.
“This has now turned out to be a cause for concern for us and village volunteers, who are frequently confronted by the illegal gold miners,” Kijazi said, adding that the task to root out artisanal miners in the area has hit a snag because of limited resources.
