The commission for structuring the gold sector will visit the Sarakreek area next week to monitor whether gold miners there abide by the mining laws and use methods to prevent pollution. The commission has learned that traditional leaders collect money and therefore allow pollution. “If we clean up, we must clean up everything. Part of Lebidoti is not honest, as the villagers allow pollution in exchange for gold and drums of oil,” commission chairman Gerold Dompigsays.
He calls the problem in the Sarakreek area a complex one. The villages of Lebidoti, Bakoe and Sarakreek have been complaining about polluted water for quite some time now, and have blocked access to the creek many times to protest the fact that they cannot mine for gold in the area. "They cannot use the water anymore because of the inhabitants' mistakes. The water installation has broken down due to bad maintenance." The pollution has been occurring for years, Dompig claims.
